Darrell Trout Lectures

I currently present slide-illustrated lectures on the following subjects:

Creating A Country Garden

An overview and the philosophy of creating a country garden (or cottage garden.) Country gardens really are a state of mind rather than rural vs. city style. Learn how to create a bucolic feel anywhere, on any size property with any budget. See how color, muted or brilliant tones, flourishes freely in the country garden. Learn how country gardens produce a relaxed and informal ambiance rather than being rigid and formal. By showing various garden designs and appropriate plants, I show how to create a garden that strongly reflects the personality and preferences of their owners and creators.

Creating A Kitchen Garden

An overview of creating a kitchen garden. I show a range of garden designs that incorporate herbs, vegetables, and flowering plants that will inspire attendees to create their own kitchen gardens (or at least, add some unusual herbs, veggies, or edible flowers to an aesthetic mix).

I Was the Rock Garden Serf

A light hearted look at my transition from amateur to professional horticulturist (many an amateur’s dream) while working as an intern at the New York Botanical Garden in the Rock Garden and Propagation Greenhouses. I will provide a look at some fun moments of that transition, the tasks I performed, and the plants I learned to love (or be afraid of).

Those Fabulous Gesneriads

A look at the gesneriads, an extraordinarily diverse and interesting plant family that contains some of the most beautiful and easily grown indoor, container, conservatory, and alpine plants. They range from micro-miniature to tree size with habitats from tropical to alpine.

Streptocarpus

South African Gems---An review of Streptocarpus which includes some amazing botanical and horticultural curiosities. Species vary from tiny plants a few inches long to huge, single-leafed (unifoliates) over 3 feet long and 2 feet wide, some are fragrant or have a few leaves or grow as many-leafed rosettes. They are wonderful and challenging plants. (The talk could also include hybrids.)

The Alpine Gesneriaceae

The Asiatic and European alpine gesneriads are among the most beautiful and challenging rock garden and alpine plants. See their beauty, learn their history and habitats, and get hints on growing them in troughs, rock walls, and rock gardens or in an alpine house.

Daphnes (Co-presented with John Bieber, President of the Daphne Society)

The genus Daphne offers great rewards and some new challenges for gardeners. Learn about the lore, history, and how to grow and propagate these amazing shrubs. We will dispel much of the misinformation about Daphnes in the literature.

I tailor each lecture to the individual group. Each is about 50 minutes long and I take questions during and at the end of the lecture. This adds about 10 more minutes to total a full hour. They all entertain along with educating. I would be happy to make my books available and sign them during the appearance for your group. Fees are negotiable.
