| Biography of Darrell Trout |
After a career in business, Darrell Trout trained at the New York Botanical Garden and then worked there in the Rock Garden and in the propagation greenhouses. His writing and photographs have appeared in specialty journals and magazines including, Rock Garden Quarterly, American Horticulturist, Gardening How-To, Working Mother, Country Living Gardener, Nashville Parent, and The Gloxinian.
Darrell is the past president of the Long Island Horticultural Society, formed and chairs the Gold Medal Plant Award committee, is a certified nurseryman and is a vice president of the newly formed Daphne Society. He is formerly a director of the Garden Writers of America, co-editor of the CrossWords, the newsletter of Gesneriad Hybridizers Association, a contributing editor to the Gloxinian and a past president of the NY Chapter of the American Gloxinia and Gesneriad Society.
Darrell's first book, Country Garden Planner was published in October 1998; his second, Kitchen Garden Planner was published in March 1999. Kitchen Garden Planner won a Quill and Trowel Award from the Garden Writers of America. Darrell was a technical editor of Ortho's All About Houseplants. He was formerly the coordinator of gardening courses at the New York Botanical Garden; one of the largest gardening education programs in the US. He teaches college courses in business and at the New York Botanical Garden. He has appeared on radio and TV, including two recent appearances on Martha Stewart Living, and lectures throughout the US and Canada.
